Muscimol

Muscimol (Agarin; Agarine) is a brain-penetrant isoxazole with psychoactive activity. Muscimol is also a selective agonist of the inhibitory neurotransmitter, GABA ionotropic receptors. Muscimol can be isolated from from Amanita muscaria and related mushrooms. All in all, Muscimol is a potent GABA_A receptors agonist (EC₅₀=0.2 μM), a partial GABA_Creceptors agonist, and an inactive GABA_B receptors agonist. Muscimol inhibits the oligomerization of NINJ1 during cell membrane rupture. Muscimol has calming, anti-anxiety, hallucinatory and cell protection effects^[1]. In Vivo:Muscimol affects the function of the prefrontal cortex, and impairs (1 μL, 5 μg/μL; infusion in prefrontal cortex) monkeys' performance in the counting task after injection into the ventral prefrontal cortex, but not after injection into the dorsal prefrontal cortex^[2].
Muscimol affects trace conditioning of anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and shows (62.5 or 125 µg/side) no effects on suppression to the noise stimulus in the 10-second trace groups^[3].
