N-Butylthiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) is a potent urease inhibitor. Butylthiophosphoric triamide inhibits nitrification and reduces the conversion of urea to NH3 gas[1].
In Vitro:N-Butylthiophosphoric triamide binds to the active site (nickel center) of urease to form a stable complex, prevents urea from approaching the nickel atom, thereby inhibiting the activity of urease, delaying urea hydrolysis, reducing the generation and volatilization of ammonia[1].
N-Butylthiophosphoric triamide improves the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer use, thereby increasing crop yields, and reducing the occurrence of environmental problems caused by ammonia volatilization[1][2].
