Penicillic acid is a polyketide mycotoxin produced by several species of Aspergillus and Penicillium. Penicillic acid exhibits cytotoxicity in rat alveolar macrophages (AM) in vitro. Penicillic acid inhibits Fas ligand-induced apoptosis by blocking self-processing of caspase-8[1][2].
In Vitro:Penicillic acid (0.1 mM, 30 min) results in a significant chromium release in alveolar macrophages in a dose- and time-dependent manner[1].
Penicillic acid (1 mM, 4 h) produces a significant decrease in ATP levels of alveolar macrophages compared to control[1].
Penicillic acid (0.3 mM, 2 h) inhibits protein synthesis in alveolar macrophages[1].
Penicillic acid (0-1000 μM, 4 h) inhibits DNA fragmentation induced by Jo2 dose-dependently in A2o cells[2].
Penicillic acid (0-100 μM, 4 h) markedly reverses a reduction in cell viability of A2o cells exposed to Jo2[2].
Penicillic acid (200 μM, 1 h) effectively prevents caspase-8 processing in Raji cells treated with higher concentrations of FasL[2].
