DAB (tetrahydrochloride hydrate) is commonly used as a chromogenic substrate in immunohistochemistry and enzymatic histochemistry to visualize an antigen or enzyme of interest. When oxidized by hydrogen peroxide, DAB (tetrahydrochloride hydrate) produces a brown precipitate at the site of the antigen or enzyme, which is easy to detect and observe under a microscope.
