Lanolin is a yellow fat that can be extracted from wool. Lanolin can be used as a skin moisturizer and applied topically to relieve nipple pain and chapping during lactation[1][2][3]. In Vitro:Lanolin, when mixed with olive oil to make an ointment, shows significant protective effects against dermatitis and cancer caused by mineral oil. Its protective effects against tar, however, vary with dosage: it is effective at low doses but may promote cancer at high doses[2]. In Vivo:Lanolin (applied to tails; once daily; 6 days) can improve ringtail symptoms in transgenic rat pups[3].
