Brevetoxin B (Brevetoxin-2) is a red tide toxin. Brevetoxin B affects sodium, potassium and calcium currents in nerve terminals. Brevetoxin B also modulates the metabolic activity of Jurkat cells, reduces cell viability and induces apoptosis. Brevetoxin B can be used in research on synaptic transmission and tumors[1][2].
In Vitro:Brevetoxin-B (0.011-1.11 μM; 10 min) concentration-dependently modulates multiple presynaptic ion currents at motor nerve terminals in mouse sternal deltoid muscle preparations: at a concentration of 0.11 μM, it enhances sodium and potassium currents while inhibiting calcium-activated potassium currents and slow calcium currents; at a concentration of 1.11 μM, it inhibits all detected ion currents[1].
Brevetoxin B (0-10 μg/mL; 0-48 h) affects the viability of Jurkat cells, causing a significant concentration- and time-dependent decrease in cellular metabolic activity[2].
Brevetoxin B (0-10 μg/mL; 3 h) significantly induces caspase-3-dependent apoptosis in Jurkat cells[2].
