Ferene disodium (Ferene S) is a chromogenic chelating agent used primarily as a specific detection reagent for Fe2+ and iron-binding proteins. Ferene disodium specifically recognizes iron ions by binding to Fe2+ to form a stable 3:1 chromogenic complex. Ferene disodium is used for the colorimetric quantitative determination of serum iron and lactoferrin[1][2].
In Vitro:Ferene disodium (Ferene S) (0.75 mM; 5 min to overnight) specifically binds and stains serum transferrin, ovotransferrin, lactoferrin in human milk, cytochrome C, and hemoglobin in polyacrylamide gels[2].
Ferene disodium is a highly water-soluble chromogenic chelating agent that selectively detects Fe2+, with a maximum absorption wavelength of 593 nm and a molar absorption coefficient of 34,500 cm-1 M-1, exhibiting approximately 1.3-fold higher sensitivity than Ferrozine[1].
