3β-Ursodeoxycholic acid (Isoursodeoxycholic acid) is a bile acid. 3β-Ursodeoxycholic acid shows good tolerance and well intestinal absorption by oral adminstation. 3β-Ursodeoxycholic acid can be isomerized by intestinal and hepatic enzymes to yield UDCA[1].
In Vitro:3β-Ursodeoxycholic acid (100 μM) reveals cytoprotective effects towards ethanol-induced cell injuries in HepG2 cells[1].
In Vivo:3β-Ursodeoxycholic acid (2.5 g/kg, p.o. for 3 weeks) converts in the liver to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in bile duct ligated rats, features UDCA pro-drug characteristics[2].
