Phenolphthalein is an acid-base indicator that is colorless in an acidic environment and pink in an alkaline environment. Phenolphthalein is genotoxic and potentially carcinogenic to mice. In addition, phenolphthalein is also a blood indicator[1][2][3]. In Vitro:Phenolphthalein (2.5-10 μg/ml, 24 h; 1.25-15 μg/ml, 8 d) induces an increase in transformed cells in the Syrian hamster embryo (SHE) cell transformation assay[1]. In Vivo:Phenolphthalein (800 and 2400 mg/kg; i.g.; once daily for 26 weeks, 2400 mg/kg; p.o.; daily in the diet for 26 weeks) is genotoxic to p53+/- mice and causes proliferation of polychromatic erythrocytes with micronuclei[1].
