Methazolamide (L584601) is a BBB-penetrable and orally active carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, with a Ki of 14 nM for human carbonic anhydrase II. Methazolamide can reduce intraocular pressure and has a neuroprotective effect, being able to inhibit neuronal apoptosis. Methazolamide can be used in the research of ophthalmic diseases such as glaucoma and cerebrovascular diseases such as subarachnoid hemorrhage[1][2][3]. In Vitro:Methazolamide (0.0001 nM-200 μM; 18-48 h) can inhibit blood exposure or Hemoglobin (HY-P2995)-induced neuronal cell death and ROS production in primary cortical neurons[1]. In Vivo:Methazolamide (20 mg/kg; intraperitoneal injection; once every 12 h for no more than 7 days) has a neuroprotective effect in SAH mice[1].
