Dehydroacetic acid (Biocide 470F) is a pyrone derivative. Dehydroacetic acid has antibacterial, antifungal and phytotoxic activities. Dehydroacetic acid can be added to cosmetics, food and beverages for preservation and other purposes. Dehydroacetic acid can also be used to synthesize various heterocycles and cycloaddition products[1][2]. In Vitro:Dehydroacetic acid (2-5 days) has MICs of 0.42 mg/mL for E. coli and 0.84 mg/mL for S. aureus, with MBCs of 1.69 mg/mL for E. coli and S. aureus[1]. In Vivo:Dehydroacetic acid has an oral LD50 of 1 g/kg in rats, 1.18 g/kg by intraperitoneal injection in mice, and 0.4 g/kg orally in dogs[2].
