Azaleucine is an inhibitor of leucyl-tRNA synthetase. Azaleucine acts as an alternative substrate for this enzyme, undergoes pyrophosphate exchange reaction, and competes with leucine for the active site of the enzyme[1]. In Vitro:DL-azaleucine (10 mM) serves as an alternative substrate for leucyl-tRNA synthetase from Aesculus hippocastanum cotyledons, supporting 20% of the pyrophosphate exchange activity seen with leucine at a concentration of 10 mM[1].
