Filastatin is a long-lasting inhibitor of Candida albicans filamentation. Filastatin inhibits adhesion by multiple pathogenic Candida species with an IC50 of ~3 μM in the GFP-based adhesion assay. Filastatin inhibits fungal adhesion to polystyrene and human cells, the yeast-to-hyphal morphological transition, induction of the hyphal-specific HWP1 promoter. Filastatin has potent antifungal effect[1].
In Vitro:Filastatin does not affect the viability of human A549 cells, even at concentrations much larger than those concentrations used in the adhesion assay (e.g., 250 μM)[1].
Filastatin can impair fungal adhesion to both inert surfaces and cultured human epithelial cells[1].
Filastatin inhibits polystyrene adhesion by C. dubliniensis and C. tropicalis and to a lesser extent, C. parapsilosis. Filastatin, therefore, inhibits adhesion by multiple pathogenic Candida species[1].
Filastatin inhibits C. albicans biofilm formation[1].
Filastatin inhibits hyphal morphogenesis and colony morphology[1].
