Homovanillic acid is a dopamine metabolite found to be associated with aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase deficiency, celiac disease, growth hormone deficiency, and sepiapterin reductase deficiency.
In Vitro: Homovanillic acid (1-40 µM, 24 h) increases presynaptic membrane protein SYN1 in HT22 and rat hippocampal neurons, protects the synaptic structure[1].
Homovanillic acid (1-40 µM, 3 h) inhibits the degradation of autophagy marker proteins LC3 and SQSTM1/p62, reduces the formation of autophagosomes[1].
In Vivo: Homovanillic acid (100-300 mg/kg, po, twice a week for 5 weeks) exhibits antidepressant and neuroprotective activities in mouse Corticosterone (HY-B1618)-induced depression models[1].
