Icomidocholic acid (Aramchol) is a lipid molecule synthesized from cholic acid and arachidic acid. Icomidocholic acid is an orally active SCD1 inhibitor and cholesterol solubilizer with antifibrotic effects. Icomidocholic acid can reduce liver fat content, dissolve cholesterol crystals and prevent gallstone formation. Icomidocholic acid can be used in the study of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)[1][2][3].
In Vitro:Icomidocholic acid (5-10 μM; 24-48 h) can alleviate cellular fibrosis by inhibiting SCD1 in hepatic stellate cells[1].
In Vivo:Icomidocholic acid (oral gavage; 5 mg/kg; 2 weeks) has a protective effect in mouse models of steatohepatitis and fibrosis[2].
Icomidocholic acid (oral administration; 3 mg/day; 3 weeks) can dissolve cholesterol crystals in bile and prevent the formation of gallstones in gallstone-susceptible mice[3].
