Stearidonic acid

Stearidonic acid (6Z,9Z,12Z,15Z-Octadecatetraenoic acid) is an orally active polyunsaturated fatty acid found in blackcurrant seed oil. Stearidonic acid can inhibit 5-lipoxygenase and reduce leukotriene and 5-HETE synthesis. Stearidonic acid can increase the content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in red blood cells. Stearidonic acid can be used for the research of metabolic disease^[1][2]. In Vitro:Stearidonic acid (10-20 μM; 30 min) inhibits 5-lipoxygenase pathway product formation in isolated human leukocytes, with 20 μM reducing leukotriene synthesis by 50% and 10 μM reducing leukotriene synthesis by 35%^[1].
Stearidonic acid (10-100 μM; 30 min) induces dose-dependent inhibition of 5-HETE formation in isolated human leukocytes, with 100 μM reducing 5-HETE levels by 45%^[1]. In Vivo:Stearidonic acid (1% in diet; oral; daily; 21 days) fed to rats produces a two-fold greater enrichment of plasma EPA than an equivalent α-Linolenic acid (HY-N0728) diet^[2].
