Sulfamethazine (Sulfadimidine) sodium is a brain-penetrant sulfonamide antibiotic. Sulfamethazine sodium inhibits bacterial growth by blocking the synthesis of folic acid. Sulfamethazine sodium can be used for research on bacterial infections[1][2].

In Vivo:Sulfamethazine (0.3 g/kg; i.m.; single dose) sodium demonstrates restricted passage across the blood-brain barrier in adult pregnant and non-pregnant Wistar rats, with brain levels consistently reaching 30-37% of corresponding blood levels[1].
Sulfamethazine (80 mg/kg; i.v.; single dose) sodium treatment significantly reduced α, β and AUC0-∞, and significantly increased t1/2α, Vd and CIB, with an absolute bioavailability of 1.01[2].
