4-Methylphthalic anhydride is an organic acid anhydride and an immunogen/sensitizer. 4-Methylphthalic anhydride induces the production of specific immunoglobulin E and immunoglobulin G antibodies. 4-Methylphthalic anhydride is used in studies of occupational allergy[1]. In Vitro:4-methylphthalic anhydride forms a conjugate with rat serum albumin at a hapten density of 26 mol/mol (UV method) and 27 mol/mol (TNBS method)[1]. In Vivo:4-Methylphthalic anhydride (0.1 mL of 0.2 M; intradermal; single injection split into two 0.05 mL portions) induces the highest median specific IgE (3200) and IgG (6400) titers in Brown Norway rats compared to other tested organic acid anhydrides via intradermal immunization[1].
