Atrazine, a triazine herbicide, is principally used for control of certain annual broadleaf and grass weeds. Atrazine inhibits photophosphorylation but typically does not result in lethality or permanent cell damage in the short term[1][2].
In Vivo:Atrazine (0-33.73 mg/kg, mixed in the feed, daily for 52 weeks) causes developmental toxicity in the rabbit and cardiotoxicity in a dog[2].
Atrazine (0-36.2 mg/kg, males, 0-45.3 mg/kg, females, mixed in the feed, daily for 24 months) suppresses the luteinizing hormone surge during the estrus cycle, leading to the maintenance of elevated blood levels of 17β-estradiol (E2) and prolactin in rats[2].
