Pyrantel

Pyrantel is an orally active antiparasitic agent. Pyrantel induces spastic paralysis in parasites via actions on neural and muscular cholinergic receptors as a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist. Pyrantel eliminates both immature and mature endoparasites in horses. Pyrantel can be used in research related to parasitic infections^[1][2][3]. In Vitro:Pyrantel acts as an L-subtype cholinergic receptor agonist in Ascaris suum body-flap muscle, with a pEC₅₀ of 7.24^[2]. In Vivo:Pyrantel (10-30 mg of base/kg; administered orally via gastric tube; single dose) exhibits highly effective and stable anthelmintic activity against equine gastrointestinal nematodes (with a 100% clearance rate for immature Parascaris equorum, 99-100% for Strongylus vulgaris, and 92-95% for small strongyles), while its anthelmintic efficacy against Strongylus edentatus and immature Oxyuris equi varies^[3].
