Zaragozic acid A is a fungal metabolite that acts as a reversible competitive inhibitor of squalene synthase. Zaragozic acid A is an inhibitor of acute hepatic cholesterol synthesis in mouse (IC50 = 6 μM)[1].
In Vitro:Zaragozic acid A inhibits cholesterol synthesis with an IC50 of 6 μM in HepG2 cells[1].
Zaragozic acid A (10 μg) results in a dramatic decrease in labeling of cholesterol, squalene, and lanosterol when compared with the control in HepG2 cells[1].
