Cresol is an orally active endogenous metabolite. Cresol is classified in Carcinogen Category 3 A due to its tumour-promoting properties in mouse skin, which has three isomers: o-Cresol, m-Cresol and p-Cresol used as cosmetic biocides/preservatives or fragrance ingredients. Cresols can be absorbed through skin, the respiratory tract and the digestive tract, then metabolized by the liver and excreted by the kidney as glucuronide and sulfate metabolites[1][2][3].
In Vivo:Cresol (100-450 mg/kg, mixed dietary administration, daily) is highly irritating to corrosive to the skin and eyes and is readily taken up from the gastrointestinal tract in animal models[1].
