Adipic acid (Hexanedioic acid) is an orally active compound with anti-HSV-1 activity. Adipic acid has low toxicity and can be used as a food additive and a gelling agent. Adipic acid can also be used in the synthesis of lubricants, artificial resins, plastics, etc[1][2][3].
In Vitro:Adipic acid has an IC50 of 0.4 μM against HSV-1 in Vero cells, but has no significant effect on the growth of non-infected cell monolayers[1].
In Vivo:Adipic acid (oral administration; single dose) has low acute toxicity. The lethal dose range is 940 to >11000 mg/kg in rats, 1900 to 4200 mg/kg in mice, and no lethality is observed when the dose in rabbits reached 11000 mg/kg[2].
Adipic acid has LD50 values in male albino rats via acute oral administration, intraperitoneal injection, and intravenous injection of 1900 mg/kg, 275 mg/kg, and 680 mg/kg, respectively[3].
