4-Ethylphenol is a volatile phenolic compound associated with off-odour in wine. 4-Ethylphenol is a phenolic compound that can be synthesized by intestinal flora. 4-Ethylphenol will be converted to 4-ethylphenyl sulfate (HY-W674241) by Lactobacillus plantarum[1][2].
In Vitro:4-Ethylphenol causes DNA damage and induces the formation of 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) in calf thymus DNA under the presence of Cu (II)[4].
In Vivo:4-Ethylphenol (colonization) reduces oligodendrocyte maturation and myelination in brains, and causes increased anxiety-like behavior in C57BL/6J mouse models[2].
4-Ethylphenol (30-300 mg/kg, po, daily for 42 days) causes mortality during labor and in offspring, leads to some abnormal nursing behaviors in Sprague Dawley rats models[3].
