Maltol, a type of aromatic compound, is an antioxidant agent. Maltol enhances neural function by mitigating oxidative stress and cell apoptosis. Maltol is an inhibitor of oxidative damage in nerve cells and is effective in preventing diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Maltol is used extensively as a safe flavoring agent and food preservative. Maltol is a metal ion chelator that can be used in the field of catalysis, cosmetics, and medicine[1][2].
In Vitro:Maltol (0.1-0.5 mM) significantly increases the viability of RSC96 cells co-incubated with H2O2, elevates anti-apoptotic Bcl-XL expression, and reduces pro-apoptotic BAX and caspase-3 expression[1].
Maltol (2 mM; pretreatment for 2 hours) protects SH-SY5Y cells from H2O2-induced oxidative damage through antioxidant and anti-apoptotic mechanisms[2].
In Vivo:Maltol (50-200 mg/kg; oral gavage, once daily for 12 weeks) significantly improves thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia[1].
