L-Anserine nitrate is a naturally occurring histidine-containing dipeptide that is found in vertebrate skeletal muscle and animal tissues. L-Anserine nitrate serves as a growth-promoting supplement in serum-free HMI-244 medium for bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma evansi. L-Anserine nitrate supports the continuous in vitro proliferation of these parasites, and the proliferated parasites retain their morphological characteristics and infectivity to mice. L-Anserine nitrate can be used in studies of African trypanosomiasis[1]. In Vitro:L-Anserine nitrate (17.0 mg/L; 0-90 days), as part of the serum-free HMI-244 medium, supports continuous axenic growth of bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei IL2343 and Trypanosoma evansi G6 for over 90 days, reaching maximum cell densities of 2.6 × 106 cells/mL and 2.2 × 106 cells/mL with doubling times of 10.6 hours and 10.9 hours, respectively[1].
